Debbie – Marie Henshaw

Biography

Cornish-born artist Debbie grew up in the picturesque village of Porthcothan, where she explored the beautiful bay in all weathers. Her love of painting blossomed amidst the dramatic, stormy seascapes that define the Cornish coast. The ever-changing seasons, with their shifting colours and hues, inspire the atmosphere in her work. Debbie’s paintings
connect emotion and colour, creating stunning additions to any home.

Style

Debbie pours her heart and soul into every piece. Her passion radiates through her brushstrokes, while her intriguing use of palette knives adds remarkable depth and texture. Drawing from deep-rooted spirituality, Debbie’s art is powerfully expressive—viewers often find themselves transported into another world, invited to pause and reflect on what
they feel and experience in the moment.

In awe of nature’s power, Debbie channels the sensations of brewing storms, the energy of the wind, and the drama of lightning strikes into her work. The atmospheric mood, whether illuminated by sunlight or moonlight, features strongly in her paintings. Her art invites you to explore the stunning Cornish coastline through her eyes—can you feel the movement of wind and sea, the sense of being lost in time and tide?

Inspired by the majesty of old ships and the craftsmanship of shipwrights and boat builders like her grandfather, Debbie honours the legacy left for future generations to cherish.

When painting, Debbie says, “I am not simply recreating an ‘arty’ movement; the truth is, I am absorbed or lost in the painting. I don’t speak; I just must paint! I’m obsessed—the colours seem larger than life. I lack confidence, but incredibly, the canvas appears with subtle details we might view on the surface but not see. Come closer, look deeper—what do you see or feel?”

Inspiration

Debbie’s paintings celebrate the power and majesty of Mother Nature. Expressive skies and incredible seas feature heavily in her work, reflecting her deep love for the ocean and the natural world.

She admires artists who use colour to great effect, including Julie Dumbarton, Joe Armstrong, Tamsin Dearing, Sarah Cowen, Peter Monamy, Joseph Mallord William Turner, Agnes Hawkins, Vashti Trudeau, Nicholas St John Rosse, Tony Forest, and Mike Haywood. Julia Prior

Biography

After a career in the designer fashion industry working for Betty Jackson in London, Julia moved to Padstow, where she married and has two children

Julia joined the Padstow Art Group in 2007 as a relative beginner and has developed her style working in acrylics,  oils and mixed media in mostly coastal views and semi-abstract representations.

Living in Cornwall exposes her to the raw and natural coastline. Walking along the coastal paths often triggers a feeling or an emotion which becomes my starting point for the painting.

The ever-changing moods of the sea and sky inspire me, the beauty of the colours and the light that plays between them. She experiments with paint and colour and tries to capture the essence of the places she has visited; she hopes they evoke a memory or sentiment for the viewer. It is the relationship between the Sea and the sky and the vastness and freedom of them both that she hopes to portray.

Style

Julia paints in acrylic, oil and mixed media and has recently introduced resin and ink into her pictures, which gives a new twist to the texture and radiance of her work.

Inspirations

Some of Julia’s favourite paintings are the atmospheric oils by JMW Turner and New Zealand’s Doreen McNeill. Whose use of colour in her abstract work is simply stunning.

Peter Henshaw

Biography

Peter’s artistic journey is a testament to resilience and passion. Despite being colour-blind, Peter’s use of colour in his paintings is nothing short of breathtaking. The creative process for Peter is not just about technique, but about overcoming the challenge of perceiving colours differently from most artists. This unique perspective has become a defining feature of his work, infusing each piece with a sense of wonder and originality.

In the mid-1980s, Peter moved to Cornwall, drawn by its stunning countryside and magnificent coastal views. The landscape quickly became both his muse and his sanctuary. Peter’s love for the outdoors is evident in his art, as he explores the interplay of land and sea from every vantage point. In his youth, Peter was an avid sailor, which gave him a deep
understanding of the sea and sails—an understanding that now enriches his artistic depictions of maritime life.

Style

Peter’s preferred medium is watercolour, a choice that presents its own set of challenges for someone who is colour-blind. Yet, through perseverance and experimentation, he is mastering the art of mixing colours, often achieving results that surprise even those with perfect vision. Peter’s versatility extends beyond watercolours; he works successfully with pastels, acrylics, and oils, each medium offering new opportunities for creative expression and technical growth.

Inspiration

Peter’s journey has not been without obstacles. Early on, an art schoolteacher told him to give up art, claiming he wasn’t good enough. Rather than deter him, this criticism became a catalyst for Peter’s determination. In the late 1980s, he joined the Padstow Art and Craft group, where, under the guidance of Jim Lennon, he learned to paint buildings, birds, and small animals using acrylics. Jim’s advice—that everyone criticises art, and that one should paint what they know—resonated deeply with Peter.

Peter’s love of boats shines through in his Watercolour depictions of sailing vessels, reflecting both his technical skill and his emotional connection to the sea. His passion for painting is matched only by his determination to master new techniques and continually evolve as an artist.

Among the artists Peter admires are Turner, Vashti Trudeau, Andrew Hucklesberry, Tony Forest, and Nicholas St John Rosse. Their influence can be seen in his work, yet Peter’s art remains distinctly his own—a celebration of overcoming adversity, embracing nature, and finding beauty in every challenge.

Commissions

Peter welcomes commissions and is delighted to discuss your specific artistic requirements. Whether you are seeking a dramatic seascape, a tranquil countryside scene, or a unique maritime painting, Peter offers a range of sizes and mediums to suit your space. Each commission is approached with care and creativity, ensuring a bespoke artwork that captures your vision and brings the spirit of Cornwall into your home.
